Q.1. Explain the following citations with reference to their context and give your own critical comments :
(a)   (i) Lydia's elopement with Mr. Wikham
Or
        (ii) Charlotte Lucas 
(b)   (i) Mrs. Sparsit 
Or
        (ii) The Conclusion of Hard Times
(c)    (i) The Gothic elements in Jane Eyre
Or
        (ii) Bertha Mason.

Q.2.  (a) (i) "In direct contrast to German philosophy which descends from heaven to earth, here we ascend from earth to heaven." Comment on to this statement in the light of Marx's views on the social nature of consciousness as expressed in The German Ideology.
           
              (ii) Why, according to John Stuart Mill, is the social relationship between the two sexes,"wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement"? Explain.

         (b) (i) "The nineteenth century English novel,for all its formal realism, very often ends on an unreal note." Discuss.
              (ii) Comment on the use of fantasy in Victorian poetry. 

Q.3. (a) Discuss The Mill on the Floss as a novel about childhood in nineteenth century England.
Or
        (b) "Conclusions are the weak point of most authors." In the light of this remark by George Eliot,critically examine the conclusions of The Mill on the Floss.

Q.4. (a) Consider the nature of the statement made by Tennyson in "The Lady of Shalott" about the relationship between the artist and society.
Or
        (b) Comment on the significance and appropriateness of the title "Goblin Market" for Christina Rossetti's poem.
